We've had a busy start to our week - immediately after work, we have 3 hours of VBS (Vacation Bible School) from Sunday through Wednesday. I foolishly agreed to do the music, but wisely requested an assistant, which worked out even better than I'd hoped. Our pastoral intern (I guess that's what he is?) agreed to assist, and did such a good job the first day, and was so enthusiastic, that he was able to take over completely last night, which meant I was able to stay with my boys for the entire evening, making the entire VBS process much more enjoyable.
Unlike the VBS of my childhood, this one is for families, so parents are asked to attend with their kids. We start at 5:30 with gathering time, then we all have dinner together, after which we all sing a song (guess who gets to lead the song? -- Not me any more!)
After the brief sing-along, we split into 4 groups, and spend about 25 minutes at each of 4 areas: drama, games, art, and music.
We finish the evening with another sing-along and prayer.
It is fun, but very time-consuming and draining. Also, the dinner portions aren't quite the ginormous size we're used to in our family, so we end up having a second, late-night dinner before bedtime, the end result being that we haven't been as successful getting to bed earlier (in preparation for returning to school - which is right around the corner!).
We actually could have gotten to bed at a reasonable "school schedule" time last night, because I had things prepared for the "second dinner" before we left for VBS. But we decided to watch one of the shows we taped, which gave Harrison the time he needed to create his own drum set from random items he found around the house, basement and garage.
So today, he is holding "auditions" for a band that he plans to put together using daycare students, which gave me just enough time to post this blog (but not enough time to edit or review...sorry!)
